5starbalivilla.com.au – Bali is famous for its excellent surfing, but some of the best are on the southern coast and around Bukit peninsula. These fun playgrounds comprise serious reef breaks and large curls- any beginners shouldn’t even attempt them.
Some of these barrier reefs produce a perfect break for pros and beginners alike.
The surf spots of Padang Padang and Uluwatu host major surfing championships due to their long breaks, as well as the exotic backdrop these breaks offer with their towering temple.
Check out this awesome guide on the best surf spots in Bali if you’d like to share waves with world-class surfers.
Best Surf Spot in Bali
Uluwatu
Uluwatu is famous for not just its top waves but also the experience of surfing at a beautifully-situated cliff with some of Bali’s iconic temple monuments nearby.
One of the best things about surfing here is that you can look up on the hill and see an ancient Hindu shrine & a magnificent cliff face.
Crowds start to come into the picture once waves get below 1 meter, but when they break at the right angle it can create epic barrels. To get the most out of your experience, it’s a good idea to look at tide charts or ask local veterans about tide directions.
Remember to bring board, reef boots and some cash for a great massage at one of the warungs on the cliff. Be aware of tide changes otherwise you may be swept away to Padang Padang before you know it
Padang Padang
Padang Padang has consistently good waves and the best part is you can walk there, or catch a little boat. When you first get to the beach, there’s a cool rock entrance that opens out onto some beautiful white sand and sea.
It’s located between Bingin and Uluwatu, and it is also one of the regular hosts for international surfing competitions. Waves in padang-padang on average measure 1 meter or more.
Suitable for experienced surfers, sharp reefs lurk under the beautiful waves. Occasionally, break onto the rocks. Although it is strictly for advanced surfers, this beach gets crowded with people on weekends
Impossibles
Located between Bingin and Padang Padang, this spot features a long reef.
Impossibles offers 3 take-off zones, with the first one accessible by Padang Padang. The 2 others can be accessed from the surf spot’s midsection. Catch long and powerful swells with consistent barrels here that you won’t want to miss out on.
It can be a pretty tough challenge to find the right spot and go through the tough surf, but as you wait for it to calm, you can catch a glimpse of the wonderful panoramas of its beautiful beach and irregular rock formations.
Bingin
Bali’s Bingin beach can be found an hour’s drive from Kuta. A lot of surfers like to come here because it faces the same south-western side of Bukit peninsula, and offers waves that are somewhat comparable to Uluwatu’s waves.
Bingin’s waves are enjoyable, but not as big or long-lasting as its neighbouring campsites. It might be a little more difficult for you to catch a good wave if you’re not on high alert.
Before heading to Bingin, ask around for help getting caught up on the tides. Tides do change over time so you are responsible for checking it yourself before making any assumptions. Try to swim when it’s not too crowded-Bingin is more popular than Uluwatu because the waves make it more accessible.
Canggu
One of the most famous spots for surfing in Canggu is Pantai Batu Mejan, which is also known as ‘Echo Beach.’ The waves here are usually larger than Kuta’s, especially in the mornings. The black-sand beach and reef breaks are suitable for intermediate surfers.
Sometimes sets at the surf break might be changing while you’re out there surfing. Sometimes it might take up to 30 minutes before the right wave will come around. The waves are usually pretty fast, but most people prefer going on lefts rather than rights.
You can find more beautiful peaks down the coast to the northwest, towards Pererenan Beach.
Airport Lefts
This surfing spot is about 1km away from the runway and at the southern end of Kuta Reef.
It can be hard enough paddling to the location by yourself. It is highly recommended for you to hire a boat.
There are two peaks that peak surfers love to line up at. They seem to have a long, medium height wall that offers good waves during the high tides.
Airport Lefts is more popular than two other popular spots by the same name. It can be heavily affected by a strong crosswind, so keep an eye on the hoards of people here when winds are bad. Otherwise, this place is mellow unless you’re acting like a douche.
